Salmon are very much like Yellowtail Kingfish in that they tend to school and prefer the edges of reef structure and weed beds to feed. Surface flies that pop are very successful but they will also take slow retrieved deeper fished flies. The bigger fish tend to be in the front of a moving school and in mid to deep water. The smaller fish are forced to feed on the edges of the school. A tip for trolled flies is to speed up the boat when you get fish smacking the surface after the fly. At high trolling speed ( about three times the normal speed) the bigger fish will keep up and eventually hook up. Most salt water baitfish patterns work for salmon but they generally prefer sparsely dressed in blue and white.
