Yellowtail Kingfish
On the Fly

The most successful method we have found is to trawl a big white and blue popper around until you locate a school of Yellowtail. The fish are very aggressive and slam the popper on the surface. Once you have found the school cast the fly and use a very fast retrieve.  Six to eight inch long baitfish flies in blue and white, green and with and orange and white are very successful.  Big squid patterns are also effective when the fish become wary or fussy, slow down the retrieve for this method.
You will need 10# rod at the very least and plenty of backing as these fish are hard to control on fly gear.  Keep them off the bottom if you can and manipulate the fish to a  sandy clear bottom to avoid being ploughed through the kelp.  50 to 80 pound gel spun tippets are hard to cast but this type of line will help to slice through any weed that the fish manage to run through.
The fish are most active on warm days with a relatively flat sea.  They prefer clear water on bright days.  As the water temperature drops at the end of Summer it becomes slightly cloudy and the fishing becomes difficult with the fly.
