What is Thursdays in Black?
Well 'Thursdays in Black' was started by a group of Argentinian women, (in what year I don't know). It was started as a protest against the oppression, domestic violence and blatant sexism of the men in their country. The group came up with a rather catchy slogan. "DEMANDING A WORLD WITHOUT RAPE AND VIOLENCE", which applies to all people regardless of race, class, or gender. The group's belief was (and still is) that no one should have to go through any type of rape or violence, whether it is either domestic violence, sexual violence, physical violence etc. I support this philosophy and I'm sure a lot of people do out there. There are also a lot of people who don't, and who think 'rape and violence' isn't such a big problem within society. If you don't here's some facts that might change your mind. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 10 men are raped or sexually assaulted in their lifetime. 99% of perpetrators are male 80% of perpetrators are known to the victim Only 1 in 10 women reports rape/ sexual assault. If it's not such a big problem, why do we have sexual assault services in nearly every town? If you personally or someone you know have been sexually assaulted there is a 24 hour phone line.
