THE SCHOOL

To provide children with education that will give the best possible preparation for the twenty first century, the founders of PSKD MONTESSORI MENTENG have established a school which embraces the Indonesian national curriculum and integrates it with the Montessori approach to learning. A key objective of the school is to provide a model that introduces new approaches to learning.

Designed to serve the Indonesian community, this bilingual school in the heart of Jakarta has brought together chiIdren of diverse backgrounds. The PSKD MONTESSORI MENTENG is constituted as an autonomous school management team within the Perkumpulan Sekolah Kristen Djakarta (PSKD) — The Jakarta Christian School Association. PSKD, a fifty five year old non-profit school association, operates 26 schools, from pre-school through secondary, in greater Jakarta. In support of our efforts, the PSKD has assigned a building for the school. This building, the pre-war Paul Kruger grade school, was constructed in 1903 and is listed as one of Jakarta's national heritage buildings. In 1996 the school founders invested more than a million dollars to restore the building and create a remarkable educational facility.

FACILITIES

There are two pre-primary classrooms (15.5 meters by 7.5 meters) and six primary classrooms (16.0 meters by 6.8 meters). Fully dedicated rooms are provided for teaching English as a foreign language, music, art, staff, teacher training and production of classroom materials. There is also a library, and a multipurpose hall (27 meters by 20 meters). All rooms are air conditioned.

STUDENT BODY

The pre-primary school (ages 3-6) currently has two classes of 22 students each. There are two classes planned for each level in the primary school, for ages 6-8, 8-10 and 10-12. Currently we have two classes for ages 6-8 and in 1998/99 we will operate one class for ages 8-10. Total enrollment is expected to reach 200 in 2002. A total of 25 places haue been designated for beneficiaries of the scholarship program. For 1998/99 enrollment should reach 115. Primary leuel class size is limited to a maximum of 25 children.

PROFESSIONAL STAFF

Professional staff consists of expatriate and Indonesian teachers. Expatriate staff work cooperatively with Indonesian teachers to develop techniques in inquiry based and Montessori approaches to learning. The Indonesian teachers help the expatriates understand the national curriculum requirements.

THE LOCATION

With a population approaching two hundred million people, Indonesia is the fourth largest country in the world. The capital, Jakarta, is a metropolis of ten million inhabitants. Indonesia has the largest Muslim population of any country in the world. There are also large Catholic, Protestant, Hindu and Buddhist communities.

Historical Indonesia offers vestiges of Dutch colonial times. The Indonesian archipelago has thousands of islands that are fascinating to explore. Mountain and seaside areas are within easy driving range of Jakarta.

In Jakarta there are air conditioned taxis, supermarkets, outdoor markets, modern hospitals and dental facilities, apartments and houses for rent. The expatriate community is substantial. International schools accommodate all nationalities.

PROGRAM OF STUDIES

Kindling a love of learning and developing the potential of the whole child are essential elements of the program which prepares future leaders in industry, science and the arts. The Indonesian curriculum is taught with the Montessori/inquiry based approach to learning. Using the national curriculum, teachers break down the required subjects into modules and provide supplementary learning materials and experiences. These enhance the chiId's grasp of the concepts involved. In each classroom, an expatriate head teacher works closely with one or two Indonesian teachers.

Core subjects covered are math, language, history, geography, science and civics. Art, crafts, music, English as a second language, fitness and sporting skills and computer technology are also incorporated in the program. The library includes a wide range of CD ROMs, reference and story books in English and Indonesian.
