They say, "Prayer changes things."
God promises that people who pray are far better off, so it must change something! (James 4:2-3 and Matthew 7:7-11).
If prayer changes few things, why tell us to pray "in everything"? (Philippians 4:6)?
Prayer helps make "all things" work together for good (Romans 8:26-28).
That's talking about "all things that pertain to life and godliness" (2Peter 1:3-4, 11), and the "life" is eternal life.
Prayer's purpose is that things "turn out for salvation" (Philippians 1:19).
Prayer will change material things if for spiritual benefit. Prayer is not for satisfying material lusts and whims, but we should ask for our genuine material needs.
In one breath Jesus taught us to pray, "Give us each day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses..." (Matthew 6:11-12).
Prayer avails "much" (James 5:16). But how much is "much"? It's "more than we ask or think" (Ephesians 3:20).
Prayer changes things as much as is necessary to ensure the salvation of our souls. That's very much indeed!
Sometimes in a miraculous manner. For example Peter raised Tabitha from death (Acts 9:40).
Sometimes in an extraordinary manner. For example the case of Elijah and the drought (James 5:17-18).
But mostly in an ordinary manner. For example when Paul was met by his friends (Acts 28:15-16).
God is able to influence the ordinary course of events so that our real needs are met.
This does not diminish the power of prayer or the providence of God. In a way, it makes it all the more wonderful and abundant.
