A001="Annotations are indicated by the small question mark symbol which follows a word or statement to indicate that more information is available. If you want to see that information, just click the symbol. The Annotations page will display the extra information. You can then easily go back to where you were. The Annotations system has been incorporated into our search engine and database. Annotations were previously provided in a popup window, however that has now become impractical. Popup blockers stop the windows operating, and these blockers are not easily switched off. Anyway I think the current annotations system is a great improvement on the old popup windows.";

A002="This term is related to the word 'denominate' (from the Latin denominare) which means to name, especially so as to indicate a separate class within a whole. The idea of denominations in the church is foreign to the New Testament, and we Christians should glorify God in the name of Christ only. We should neither wear names invented by men nor belong to their schisms.";

A003="This is the Antioch in Syria north of Jerusalem. It was where the second church of Christ was established.

";

A004="Isaiah mentions Zion 47 times. Zion is a mountain of Jerusalem. However Zion is used as a poetic term for all Jerusalem and its environs as shown in the parallelism of this verse: “For Zion’s sake I will not be silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not keep quiet” (Isa 62:1). Zion is also used to refer to the kingdom of heaven, the church.";

A005="There are three associated terms used in Bible study circles, namely “doxology”, “benediction”, and “salutation”. These words might need explanation:

A doxology is a statement of praise to God,

A benediction is a statement of blessing,

A salutation is a statement of greeting.
";

A006="A debate on preterism arose in some churches in Queensland toward the end of the 20th century. The preterist doctrine was referred to as the AD70 doctrine. Basically preterism teaches that there will be no second coming of Christ in the future. The scriptures that we apply to the second coming of Christ, the preterist applies to the destruction of Jerusalem in AD70. That event was the second coming, according to the AD70 doctrine. In two letters to the Thessalonians, Paul taught about the nature of the second coming. He corrected the doctrine that the second coming had already taken place —a form of preterism in his day.";

A007="An atheist's blog refers to my comment on Jezebel's children being threatened with death by God. He thought me an “Aussie crackpot” because I mentioned “spiritual children”. The writer and his friend seemed to think the concept of a “spiritual child” to be imaginative. Paul shows that there is such a thing as a spiritual child. He asserts that the children of God are not the fleshly descendants of Abraham, but those who imitate Abraham's faith, these are Abraham's children (Rom 9:6-8, Gal 3:7). This establishes the principle that “children” does not always mean biological offspring, but the followers of a person's doctrine and example are called the “children” of that person. However, even if it were her literal children God was thinking of killing, and these were innocent little ones (which is impossible to prove), that would be no more of a problem to me than the death of many innocent children whom God has evidently caused to die. No doubt children were killed when God for example flooded the earth or bombed Sodom and Gomorrah with fire . He did not do these things out of capriciousness or cruelty. And I certainly do not believe the innocent children who died were punished for their parent's sin. They were not being punished at all. God obviously thought it better to take these children out of the evil place and into his embrace. I don't need to explain myself at length on this, because Kyle Butt has done a dinkum job of dealing with this problem at www.apologeticspress.org/articles/2230.'";

A009="The two titles, Messiah and Christ, are synonymous and interchangeable. “Messiah” is the Hebrew for which “Christ” is the Greek equivalent. The basic meaning of these titles is The Anointed One. See Strong: Hebrew 4899 (cf 4886), Greek 5547 (cf 5548).";

A010="The term “Great Commission” is traditionally used for Jesus’s command to his apostles to preach the gospel in all the world to all nations, and to baptize those who believe (Mtt 28:18-20). It is contrasted with the earlier so called Limited Commission of Matthew 10.";

A011="The term “xenoglossia” is defined in Chambers’s dictionary as “the spontaneous use of a language which the speaker has never heard or learned. No scientifically attested case of xenoglossia has ever come to light.” From Greek, xeno strange, glossa tongue.";

A012="The term “glossolalia” is defined in Chambers’s dictionary as “the phenomena of spontaneously uttering unintelligible sounds believed to form part of an unknown language or languages.” From Greek, glossa tongue, laleein to talk.";

A013="Surface mail could take weeks to arrive in Australia, if Australia is a long way from you. Airmail, on the other hand, arrives within a week, often in a couple of days.";

A014="Hades is the unseen nether world where the souls of the dead await the resurrection at the second coming of Christ. Hades (Sheol in the Old Testament) is sometimes translated or interpreted as the grave. The Psalmist indeed refers to Sheol and then to the pit (Psa 30:3). Some assert that the Psalmist is speaking of the grave where the fleshly body decays at death. The Psalmist, however, speaks of Sheol as a place for the soul and nobody’s soul has ever been buried in a grave. Another translation of Sheol is “hell” which confuses Sheol with Gehenna, the eternal abode of the wicked. Because of these problems some translators prefer to merely transliterate, thus they put the words Sheol and Hades..";

A015="A seminal idea is the germ, seed, or beginning of a concept. It has the potential to unite with other ideas and to grow into something substantial.";

A016="A patriarch is the father of a great family, or ancestor of a people such as a dynasty, nation, or race. A mother in the same sense is called a matriarch. An example of a patriarch in the Bible is Abraham.";

A017="A yoke is a bow-shaped crosspiece as part of the harness of beasts of burden. It joins two or more animals together such that they share the burden they are pulling.";

A018="Personification means representing an idea or principle as a person, real or imaginary. One might say that a certain dictator is the personification of evil. In stories or visions there can be fictional beings who personify something such as love, beauty, innocence, lust, greed, death, etc.";

A019="Mythical means not real, imaginary, fictitious, invented, belonging to a fairy story. Mythology is the inventing and telling of stories that are not true in themselves but supposedly represent truth. Sometimes the term myth is used instead of legend which is based upon something or someone real, but may be exaggerated and decorated with make believe.";

A020="To be impotent means to be powerless, weak, innefective, without the necessary strength. One can have considerable power, yet still not be able to get what one desires. The power which comes from God and the gospel (Rom 1:16) is able to achieve all godly aims and satisfy all godly desires. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Php 4:13) even against all odds. Other powers fall short and disappoint.";

A021="The name Israel applies to four entities in the Bible...
1. the name given to Jacob,
2. the kingdom ruled by David and Solomon,
3. the northern kingdom after the division,
4. the church that Christ established..";

A022="The Bible uses the word seed in a special sense in some passages. It means offspring or descendant. Jesus Christ was the promised seed of Abraham (Gal 3:16).";

A023="A covenant in the Bible is a legal will or testament, decreed to man by God through a mediator. A covenant may include precepts, provisos, punishments, and promises.";

A024="A mediator presents the decrees of a high authority to his subjects on his behalf. (An intercessor, on the other hand, presents the pleas of the subjects to the high authority on their behalf.";

A025="Jacob was the father of the twelve tribes of Israel. Israel is another name for Jacob. One of his twelve sons was Judah. After the kingdom divided, the break away was named after him. The remaining part was in the territory of the tribe of Judah.";

A026="The term Greek is used in certain New Testament passages, to mean Gentile or non-Jew. The Greek language and culture was still widespread so represented the world in general.";

A027="Regeneration means new birth, rebirth, being born again. Before this can happen there must be a death. In the case of being born again in Christ, one must enter into Christ's death and be buried with him as explained in Romans 6.";

A028="Metamorphosis is a change of form, especially when a creature undergoes a marvelous transformation into another creature, such as a caterpillar turning into a moth";

A029="Resurrection is rising from the dead. The mortal body dies, but at Christ's second coming a glorious body, immortal and eternal will rise up in its place.";

A030="Conversion is the change or turning of one thing (or person) into another. In the bible, this turning is toward a new and better purpose. Being converted is related to repentance (Acts 3:19).";

A031="The tabernacle was the original ornate tent of meeting for worship. It was used before the temple was built in Jerusalem.";

A032="The word mammon in some translations is just another word for money or wealth, although the word is pejorative, and expresses wealth tainted with evil";

A033="Calvary is the name of the place where Jesus was crucified. The word Calvary appears only once in the Bible (Lke 23:33 KJV). Calvarius is Latin (Roman). The name in Greek is Kranion, and in Hebrew Golgotha. All three mean [Place of the] Skull (Jhn 19:17). The name Calvary was not used by Bible writers, but by English translators. For a complete study of the word Calvary see Calvary word study";

A034="Excommunicate means to cut off from fellowship, to cast out, disinherit.";

A035="Saul of Tarsus, a persecutor of the early church, later became the Paul the Apostle after his conversion on the road to Damascus (Acts 9).

Bible map
";

A036="Apostasy (sometimes incorrectly spelled apostacy) is a definite falling away from the true faith, a turning to the teaching and practice of error, and trampling underfoot the Son of God (Heb 10:26-31). It is to be distinguished from a stumbling from which one repents and recovers with the help of Christ (Heb 4:14-16).";

A037="An only begotten son is a unique son, one of a kind. When Jesus is called the only begotten Son of God, it does not mean God has no other sons, “for all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God” (Rom 8:14). As a parallel, Isaac was not Abraham's only son, but he was his unique son, the only son by his wife Sarah, and the only son of promise. It is in this sense that he is called Abraham's “only begotten” son (Heb 11:17).";

A038="The term vicar means acting representative or substitute. In a similar sense, an act is said to be vicarious. Regarding the title, Vicar of Christ, the Holy Spirit is the vicar of Christ on earth, (Jhn 14:15-23). No one else should be called the Vicar of Christ..";

A039="In the vision of Satan being bound and released (Rev 20:1-3,7-8), there are two periods: a thousand years in which he is bound and a short time in which he is released. These are not real periods or events in history. They symbolise the relative powers of Christ and Satan. The thousand years represents the encouraging fact that Satan is greatly restricted in how he can tempt us. The little season represents the corollary, a warning that Satan is not prevented entirely from tempting us. The principle represented by the vision is stated in plain language by Paul (see 1Co 10:13).";

A040="Psalm 110:4 likens Christ to Melchizedek, who was the king of Jerusalem long before the Jewish people existed. Melchizedek was not only a king but also a priest of the Most High God. As a priest, Melchizedek blessed Abraham and received tithes from him, acting in both his priestly and kingly roles. This happened when God was making the promises to Abraham —especially the seed promise that one of Abraham's seed (or offspring) would bless all nations and be King of kings. Melchizedek's meeting with Abraham was symbolic in regard to the Messianic promise (Hebrews 7).";

A041="A previous happening that is parallel to one presently being examined. The way matters were handled in the former event (eg the flood in Noah’s time) is a basis for how the new event (eg the end of the present world) will be handled.";

A042="There were two occasions on which Jesus drove people from the temple. The first is recorded in John 2:13-22, the second in Matthew 21:12-13.";

A043="Luke’s description of the document as “the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet” (Lke 3:2-6) shows clearly that the book, including chapter 40, was written by Isaiah, not somebody else.";

A044="The term “spirit and soul” (1Th 5:23) does not indicate two different parts, any more than “heart, soul, and mind” indicates three (Mrk 12:30). The terms heart, soul, mind, and spirit, are all words for the “inward person” (2Co 4:16).";

A045="A member of one of the opinionated and self-glorifying sects among the religious leaders and lawyers in Jerusalem. Pharisees accepted miracles, resurrection, angels, spirits, etc whereas their rivals the Saducees did not.";

A046="It is a little quirk that the salient meaning of the word “talent” in English is an ability. The meaning of the word in the parable of the talents (Mtt 25:14-30 cf Lke 19:12-28) is a measure of around 30kg of gold or silver. So we can make a play on words: the slaves in the parable were given talents according to their talents.";

A047="A small hard seed of certain Brassicas —the cabbage family. Mustard seed (usually either white Sinapis alba or black Sinapis negra) is ground to make the pungent mustard paste. We Aussies like to spread mustard paste on our corned beef. A048="It is uncertain just what plant is referred to. The Greek word is zizania, which is used in the Bible only in the parable of the tares (Mtt 13:24-30). However the parable is clearly referring to a weed that looks very like wheat when it is young, but becomes evident when the true wheat sets a fruiting head.";

A049="The lawyers mentioned in the gospels were not lawyers dealing with civil legal proceedings, but experts in religious law supposedly based on the law of Moses but in fact consisting mostly of the traditions and inventions of men (Mrk 7:9-13).";

A050="A phylactery is a small box bound to the forehead, and another on the arm, containing passages from the law (Deu 6:8)";

A051="A demon is an insanely evil and outcast spirit being, who seeks a parasitical incarnation in a fleshly body. This invasion causes various kinds of mental and physical illness and abnormality in the victim.";

A052="A microcosm is any system that exhibits, on a small scale, all the elements and parts of the greater system or world of which it is part. The destruction of Sodom and the salvation of Lot is a small-scale version of the future destruction of all the world.";

A053="Mnemonic, pronounced “nee-mon-ick,” a manner of arranging things so as to make them easier to absorb and remember. I do this a lot on simplybible.com as you have probably noticed.";

A054="A synonym, pronounced “sin-on-neem” is a word of very similar meaning to another word. When two or more words each have the same meaning, they are said to be “synonymous” with each other and are called “synonyms”.";

A055="Ephraim is the name of a major territory of the northern kingdom of Israel. In some cases the name Ephraim is used as an equivalent to Israel, and stands for all ten mainly northern territories that broke away from Judah and Benjamin";

A056="Paradigm, (pronounced “para-dime”) means a true pattern, a model example. For instance we might say that Abraham is the paradigm of faith, Christ is the paradigm of righteousness, the church of the first century in its ideal form is the paradigm for the church today, or the gospel taught in the scriptures is the paradigm for true Christian doctrine today.";
