 Topic: List pages
Further to making the site as Google friendly as possible, and helping robots follow all important links, I have begun moving some series lists to new list pages. The purpose is to reduce the number of study page links on each list page to 70 or fewer. The smaller topic lists are easier for both robots and people to use. This revision is a simple process which I have documented in the manual. I also changed the home page to reflect the revised set of topical series lists. I expect, and am monitoring, that the links placed there can be followed by robots to each topic index, and from there to each study page. The moved series are documented in the manual.

 Topic: Keyword clicks
I noticed that Google is not following all links on topical and alphabetical index pages. This is most likely because the robot is being confused by links to dsrchres.htm — dynamic links that contain a query. I solved this by writing a simple library function for such links so that the robot should merely skip them. It was an easy job to change all the links to a function call, even though I had to do them all manually. This upgrade has the added advantage of reducing the number of links as seen by the robot on a page, which really should not exceed 100 for the robot to follow them all. It also hides the links from viewers who are not running Javascript, avoiding what are virtually broken links for them.

 Topic: Charts Upgrade
I upgraded the charts system today adding a new pick-a-box for charts, checking the charts index, inserting chart flags and a charts keyword into simplybibleFinder's database, and adding a new chart.

 Topic: Kanga Korna
I am gradually upgrading the Corner Info boxes with Kanga Korna displays. Today I integrated simplybibleFinder into Kanga Korna. The first instance of this feature is in the Isaiah series. This addition fitted well into the KangaKorna() function. I added Find as another special id. This makes the link refer to the search results page. The search term attached is whatever you put for header. The documentation for Kanga Korna was updated to include this addition.

 Topic: Statistics test
I conducted a test yesterday on file f238 to verify what the stats engine means by “page requests”...

Note first the stats engine's numbers for “page requests” always equals the number of requests for html documents. So only actual web pages are included in “page requests”, and none of the associated files such as images, scripts, and style sheets.

I conducted this simple test...

This morning I checked yesterday's file request statistics. For f238.htm, and two associated files. The stats were...
23: 0.17%: Oct/26/06  3:34 AM: /~sggram/f238.htm
23: 0.17%: Oct/26/06 11:23 PM: /~sggram/isqNoark.jpg
32: 0.15%: Oct/26/06 11:19 PM: /~sggram/cOldTm.js
The number of requests for the file shows as 23. Therefore only the first category is registered as “page requests”, namely a new retrieval of a file from the server. It does not include retrievals from a browser's cache or movements to anchors within a loaded page. Use of the back and forward buttons was not included in the test, but that would normally cause retrieval only from the browser's cache, not from the server. Nevertheless, I'll cover that in a further test today.

 Topic: Computer Stolen
While we were away in Melbourne for the day, someone forced entry into our home and stole the notebook computer on which I work. This is quite a blow and a wretched inconvenience. However we must press on with the work and so we shall, if the Lord wills.

 Topic: simplybibleFinder Upgrade
Most of the functions in the simplybibleFinder script have been upgraded with a view to increasing the efficiency of the search engine. During development of the engine some code became redundant and this has been pruned. I note that statistics now show the search results page is quickly becoming the most accessed page, indicating that simplybibleFinder is gaining favour with users of the site.

I discovered a bug in the Phraseology function today. Rather than patch the problem, I simplified the function and made it operate at the beginning of input processing rather than as an afterthought.

 Topic: Statistics test
The simplybibleFinder program (the search engine that I have spent many hours writing and refining) is giving me an unexpected bonus, because the the search terms presented to simplybibleFinder are beginning to show in the statistics. This gives me excellent feedback and insight into what users are seeking. I made some minor modifications to simplybibleFinder so that I could distinguish between searches suggested by me (ie coming from hyperlinks) and searches originated by users (ie coming from forms). I modified existing hyperlinks in all alpha indexes, list and thread pages, and the keywords page, by adding a tag to them. (This was a simple task. It took less than an hour).

Page requests for year to date are: Jan 35572, Feb 30308, Mar 33900, Apr 43351, Jun 38048, Jul 55661, Aug 48702. (So far for Sep 23675). The current daily requests for pages on simplybible.com is around 1500. I note that In July page requests exceeded 50000 which is a milestone for the site. Monthly information transfer (traffic) is running at just under 3 gigabytes.

 Topic: Statistics test
I ran some tests over the past two weeks to verify the site statistics as analysed by the program to which my ISP gives me access. I used keywords and files that no user would enter. When the results came in, the test keywords and files had registered accurately. This test not only helped me to trust the statistics, but also to verify my interpretation of them.

 Topic: Sound files
I spent three hours today testing sound files. A lack of uniformity among browsers and plug-ins, and a still-too-large file size makes the use of audio on simplybible.com not very practicable as yet.

 Topic: Check of Alpha Indexes
Entries in the alpha indexes that are flagged and were checked one by one thoroughly for correct linking, including the links. A few errors were found and rectified. In passing, I also checked every link to glossary pages, and all proved ok.

 Topic: simplybibleFinder and Kanga
Made a new div in cSrchF and dsrchres to contain a 'wait' alert for the simplybibleFinder search results page. This also required three new small images and a new stylesheet entry. While doing the latter, I also moved the div style specifications for Kanga from Library to style sheet.

 Topic: Navigation links
At the very bottom of each page there is a small set of normal links (not scripted) that provide navigation when a browser is not running Javascript. Having recently upgraded 95 service pages and their structural relationships, it was necessary to revise and edit all their page end links. I did this today, and also validated, backed up, and uploaded all these pages.

 Topic: Fixing Bugs
The image map for images showing "NEXT" and "LIST" was generating the wrong alt when the image showed "NEXT" and "UP", so I modified the function GetListRef() in Libraryto change KEY[02] to an appropriate label. I also modified the key settings in Major accordingly. I noticed that the files showing in the file identifier just above the banner were out of order in certain cases, so I corrected the Minor files where necessary. Finally, I tracked down the cause of an intermittent undefined variable error in simplybibleFinder and fixed it.

 Topic: simplybibleFinder
At the risk of cluttering the page banner, I inserted a simplybibleFinder bar under the Simply Christians logo. Users now may search the site from either the top or bottom of any page. In the Major script, I shuffled Keys 21-27 to accommodate the search bar. In the style sheet, I gave the bar its own unique style .findbar changing the border and background colour make the bar recede and blend with the logo.

 Webservant’s Manual
I have begun revising, and incorporating into the site, a technical manual for the site's maintenance and management. It is a lot easier to work with the site when the manual is incorporated, and it may one day help someone else to serve in my place. (Manual finished mid August).

 Validation:
All files have now been validated to strict xml standard. This was a basic validation which got rid of vestiges of old capitalised markup, nesting errors, missing end tags, and odd fragments. The validation of more than 700 files has been done in bits and pieces over the past year.

 simplybibleFinder and Glossary
I've done a bit of fine tuning to the simplybibleFinder and Glossary systems. There are now several glossary pages at the final edit stage or completed. The simplybibleFinder database has been enriched with many more keywords. I thought this work would be tedious, but it turns out to be jolly interesting.

 Topic: simplybibleFinder Database
I've been letting the simplybibleFinder script run for a few weeks to see that it behaves itself. This week I brought the database system up to a higher level with a Thesaurus function. I also enhanced the presentation of results on the search results page, making them look just like other topic lists. Next main step in the simplybibleFinder project is data enrichment, a day-to-day task for some time to come.

 Glossary added to user helps.
There are several Bible words that need definition and explanation. For this reason I have added a glossary system to the site ready for a series of pages to be compiled in which words are studied and defined. These studies are contained in an index card format. I've done one as an example and from it have cloned a template for subsequent pages.

 Rationalizing service pages
At an early stage of developing the site, I conceived of a structure exemplified in the site map which has since had only three elements added to the original form. These were the Deep End, Search facility, and The Hub, which fitted nicely into the original structure. However, I created, over the past year, many additional service pages which have begun to smother this basic structure. This month I have brought all these service pages into line with the underlying structure, and this is reflected in a revised service directory. The tidy-up involved creating a couple of new pages, making slight modifications to the Library and Major scripts, cloning additional Minor scripts, and doing some work on images. It is only the underlying vertical structure that has been disciplined. This is not imposed upon, or made very visible to the user, who is still encouraged by the navigation system to browse in a crosswise, random access manner so as to quickly find what he or she wants.

 Server crash
A server upgrade caused simplybible.com to be down for a couple of days and after service had supposedly resumed I found that my server space was empty. The entire site was wiped out. Checking other members.datafast.net.au sites I found most of them to be off with the pixies too. Datafast was working hard to restore sites to normal, and I appreciated their efforts. However I had my site right here on my local host. All I had to do was dump it back to the remote server. There seemed no reason to wait while the Datafast crew scurried around in cyberspace looking for its ghost. Files restored bindex 20, cscripts 80, dservice 48, emanual 25, fnumbers 641, icons 127, img 86, index 1, isq 74, style 2, z 110, misc 6, total 1220 objects.

simplybibleFinder, the new site search engine
Instead of adding more Bible studies to simplybible.com in March, I spent the month working on a search engine for the site. Some time ago I added a Google search to the site, which performs an online search of Google's database for the site. This is an excellent service by Google, and of course I have retained it. However I wanted to create my own database that resides with the site and reflects the site's extensive indexes. I wanted this search engine to be totally integrated into the site, not just bolted on. I did try several search engines offered on the internet, but they were all unsuitable for one reason or another. So it was a case of starting from scratch and building a search facility that suited simplybible.com exactly. It was quite a programming job, but I fed my brain on Vegemite, Saunders Malt Extract, and Milo (separately, not mixed together) and nutted it all out. The simplybibleFinder search engine is now up and running, although there's a little fine tuning to do, and the database and thesaurus needs quite a lot of refining. I consider this to be a major improvement to the site's user-friendliness. It is the third leg in the tripod of access to the Bible studies. The tripod is (1) Alpha Index, (2) Topic Lists, (3) Search and Find. Search Page | Documentation
