Jesus

Who is Jesus?

We continue our lesson looking at that famous baby born in Bethlem and called Jesus. Who was he?

Who Was Born in Bethlehem? (Part 2)

3 Jesus Our Saviour

Mtt 1:21

The name Jesus means "The Lord Saves" and the reason Jesus was born is that he might be the Saviour of the world. He said, "The Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost" (Lke 19:10).

4 Our Great High Priest

Hebrews 4:14-16, 5:6-10

Our last answer to the question "Who was born in Bethlehem" comes from the book of Hebrews. You might not have expected Hebrews to say anything about the birth of Jesus, but it does (eg Heb 10:5). In this study, we look at two passages found in chapters 4 and 5.

When the story of Christ's birth is told, it is sometimes treated as a story complete in itself. It is thought to be the “Christmas story” and is separated from “the Easter story”.

Wise people, however, understand that the Bethlehem story is about a baby born to die.

Yes, he was born the Son of God. Yes, he was born Christ the Lord. But he was also born to become our Saviour and Great  HighPriest.

"Although he was a Son, he learned obedience from the things which he suffered. And having been made perfect he became to all those who obey him the source of eternal salvation, being designated by God as a priest according to the order of Melchizedek" (Heb 5:8-10).

Jesus came "to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself" (Heb 9:26).

It is this fact that makes the Bethlem story so much more meaningful. When we confess that Jesus Christ came in the flesh, we acknowledge that the flesh and blood of that little baby was purposed to be sacrificed as our only means of salvation (1John 2:1-2).

Wonderful

In this lesson we have answered the question, “Who was born in Bethlehem?” The answer is wonderful. The Son of God was born in Bethlehem. He is Christ the Lord, our Saviour and Great High Priest who made atonement for all our sins.
