Sermons don't come much simpler than this one. Nor on the other hand do they come much more important.
Sermon Outline
Introduction
We are familiar with Bible symbols eg Rainbow (Gen 9:11-14).
This lesson looks at symbols of Christ's death
- Old Testament looking forward
- New Testament looking back.
Old Testament types
Greek tupos (Rom 5:14)
- Animal sacrifices (Heb 10:1, 11-12)
- The scapegoat (Lev 16:7-10,20-22)
- Serpent in wilderness (Num 21:5-9; Jhn 3:14)
Note: this became an idol (2Kg 18:4)
- Jonah and the big fish (Mtt 12:38-41)
- Abraham offering Isaac (Heb 11:17)
New Testament Symbols
(A) The Lord's Supper
- The bread for his body, the cup for his blood (1Co 11:23-26)
(B) Baptism
- Symbolizes Christ’s death, burial, resurrection (Rom 6:3-11)
Note "likeness" v.5
This is a reason for immersion as proper mode.
- Also symbolises "washing" (Eph 5:25-27)
Namely, cleansing by the blood of Christ (Rev 7:14)
Our Attitude and Involvement
- Not to confuse symbol with what it represents
- Not to neglect the symbols but rather observe them
- "If you love me, keep my commandments" (Jhn 14:15)
- "You are my friends if you do what I command you" (Jhn 15:14)
