The achievements of the Australian Microwave Group have attracted criticism from two VK4 amateurs for the record distances that have been claimed.
They claim that it is unlikely that we are communicating on the microwave bands and instead communication is more likely to be the result of leakage from our SSB IF generators, a slim possibility under the right circumstances but impossible in our situation as we use different IF frequencies.
They have taken their despise of our achievements to the extreme and published their claims on a web site.
The information they have on this site is based on assumption not fact. Their argument is seriously flawed and their conclusions are incorrect.
The author of the page has been quick to tell us that he has an associate degree and therefore knows far more about the subject than us mere amateurs.
The web site challenges us to defend the integrity of our operating through correspondence with the author, this will not achieving anything except to feed the authors ego.
The author suggests that we are technically incompetent, because we have not defended the validity of our record claims by stating the obvious inability of the waveguide feeds to propagate frequencies below cut off, or that we have taken steps to ensure that our IF frequencies do not radiate significantly. The point is obvious and should not have to be stated.
We have conducted vigorous tests on all of the transverters used within our group, to be sure that they are operating correctly and on the frequencies for which they are designed.
We are satisfied that the transverters are operating correctly and the only useable radiation from these sets is on the primary frequency for which they have been constructed.
We conducted the tests on completion of the transverters construction, as a standard requirement of alignment.
We believe that it was unnecessary to publicly state the compliance of our equipment because it is obvious that such tests would have been carried out to comply with the amateur operating regulations.
The web site is nothing more than sour grapes and its sole purpose is to diminish the efforts of not just Australia's microwave operators, but microwave operators, constructors and engineers in all parts of the world.
It would be far more beneficial to the hobby if they built equipment and competed against us instead of dragging the hobby into disrepute.
The primary reason we claim a record is to motivate others into doing better than we have, secondary to that is the feeling of achievement and justification for the time and expense that goes into the hobby.
It would please us immensely if the records that we have set are exceeded by others. It would indicate to us that there are others out there willing to take up the challenge and promote the microwave bands.
